Eventually this blog will be the landing page for our site and the tabs that you see on the top of this page can and will give you the information you want and need, including directions, hours, and events.

Our 'shop' tab will take you to a Three Crafty Ladies Etsy page, which is easy to search, navigate and shop for you (as well as much easier for us to update!) Of course you can always do what so many people do - call us!!

Craft Challenge Winner Chosen!

We had a wonderful response to Three Crafty Ladies second annual Craft Challenge! Lots of beautiful quilts and other projects!

Hoffman Challenge Results are In!

Congratulations to our very own Carol DeCesare, who has had her quilt, Damsels, chosen to tour with the Hoffman Challenge this year!

This is the second year in a row that Carol has entered a quilt in the challenge and the second year she has been selected! Johanna had the pleasure of seeing last years' quilt at the World Quilt Show in West Palm Beach last year. If you are traveling to Quilt Market or Festival in Houston this fall, you can see it (yes, it will be in Houston!!) Way to go, Carol!

A Sanibel Tradition

I am not sure exactly how long the bead bracelet make and takes have been going on at Three Crafty Ladies, but I do know that there are visitors that return each year to make a bracelet. It's a tradition, and judges from the smiling faces of these recent crafters, I'd say it's one that is here to stay.

Each Thursday you can come and start your own bead bracelet tradition. It's fun, crafty and air-conditioned (and only $3.00 each. That's less than a coffee drink!)

The crafty ladies have been super busy at the shop creating wonderful samples. The shop has the most magnificent batiks with shells and other tropical patterns. Pieced in a simple quilt pattern has a lovely result, doesn't it?

Carol has done it again with her art quilts! This time she has created a quilt pattern of the iconic Sanibel Lighthouse that is easy for any creative quilter or fiber artist.

Connie has used her wonderful applique skills to create this Roseate Spoonbill block from the Florida Album collection. (have you seen those beautiful pink birds at Ding Darling?) In addition to the spoonbill, there is a dolphin, palm tree, orange, and more! (Three Crafty Ladies has them all in stock.)

That's what is new for this week! Lot's of new goodies to come!

Art Quilters Unlimited - Magic Stamp Demo

Carol attended the Art Quilters Unlimited guild meeting last Saturday and did a fabulous presentations on magic stamps, a super tool for art quilters (and other crafters, too!) Carol demonstrated how to create the stamps.

She used some unique and sometimes common household items to created patterns and textures.

The stamps are heated and texture is added. Using ink or paint, you can create your own fabric designs.

Batik Heaven!

Between two stores, with two blogs, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, etc... I tend to forget what I posted where. I put photos of the new fabrics on the website and wanted to post them here for your enjoyment! The long awaited new batik fabrics from Hoffman has finally arrived (we ordered them at Quilt Market in Houston in October!) Patience has become a virtue. They are wonderful and many have tropical themes so they are perfect for Sanibel!

Stop by if you can and see the wonderful new fabrics in person. This week it is off to Quilt Market in Salt Lake City to buy even more fabrics!! Happy quilting!

As you know, we are all crafty ladies at the shop. Mary Lou, who is our go-to gal for all things cross stitch, is also a wonderful knitter and quilter. She brought in her latest finished quilt to show us. Isn't it wonderful?

Barbara, a crafty lady from New Jersey, brought in the knitted fabric purse that she finished from the fabric and pattern she got at our shop. Way to go, Barbara - it's fabulous (great fabric choices!!)

Gone Fishing!

The rest of the country has the opposite 'season' from Florida - winter is our peak time for visitors. The rest of the country gears up for summer, and thus welcomes the bolts of new fabric previously placed at Quilt Market in March. While florida may slow down in some areas, we at Three Crafty Ladies do not! We are getting in - and will continue to receive - lots of fabulous new fabrics!!

We have the most adorable, youthful fabrics from Benartex called 'Gone Fishing'. Sea themed, of course! With it comes a free pattern called 'Under the Sea'.

How cute is this? Come into the shop and see (and touch) this wonderful fabric line!

Hand Crafting Batiks

Three Crafty Ladies has long been known for their vast selection of beautiful batik fabrics. The lovely fabrics come in a rainbow of colors with patterns as subtle as dots or as bold as shells and sea turtles. Most companies have their batiks created in Bali, where they are still done generally by hand.

One of our favorite companies that supply us with somr of our batiks (and patterns and kits) is Bold Over Batiks. I don't know a better word to describe their batiks than 'special'. They are unique and gorgeous and need to be seen and touched in person to really see why I call them special.

These batiks are created in Malaysia by fair wage paid artisans who truly take their time and produce their craft the old fashioned way. Company owner Mary has visited Malaysia and taken photos of the artisans at work.

An artisan uses a tjanting (pronounced chanting) to carefully apply the wax that is used as a resist for the dying process. Look at her hand and you care see the precision that is applied to each and every piece of fabric!

An alternative way to apply the wax is with a special stamp (if you look carefully, you'll see them hanging all around the workspace.) The wax is carefully applied in a repeating pattern. I always look carefully at batiks to see if I can see where they repeated the stamp. (I don't like to see where they can repeat in the mass produced batiks.) I just think it is amazing that these artisans are working on one section of a single bolt at a time.

I hope you appreciate the work that goes into some of the batik fabrics that you love. Since these are created individually and by hand, they are available in smaller batches. Stop by and look at these amazing products and the quilts, bags, and tops that have been created with them! We think you'll agree that they are truly special.

Journeys - Art Quilters Unlimited Show

What an inspiring and refreshing weekend we had! The Art Quilters Unlimited guild produced their very first show and what a success it was! The quilts on display were amazing! The vendors, boutique, silent auction and demos were fresh. The focus was all art quilting!

Carol and Johanna manned the Three Crafty Ladies booth, which is always fun. Who wouldn't want to socialize with creative people all day? Johanna modeled the popular Raglan Topper created from Bold Over Batik fabric. (For fans of this unique and utterly gorgeous fabric, we finally received a new shipment so get them while you can!)

We had an extra special week, as Carol was awarded second place in the Contemporary division for her 'Lighthouse' quilt. It is truly a stunning piece of art and will be on display in the shop. Way to go, Carol - we couldn't be prouder!!

This was the best in show quilt. The stitching and embellishment and paint was incredible.

Carol snapped a few photos of some of her favorites. Poppies, above, was a vibrantly colored quilt with amazing thread painting.

As you can see, even from the few photos we have posted so far, the art quilts run from realistic to abstract, floral to modern geometric. I have a few more photos to post later from my camera.
The Art Quilters Unlimited will hold another show in 2 years, with the Fort Myers quilt show in between.

World Quilt Show

I had the pleasure of going to the World Quilt Show, now in it's second year at it's West Palm Beach location. ( It's an extra treat because it is only a 20 minute drive from my house!) There were quilts from all over the world, ranging from the traditional to the ultra-modern. Every kind of quilting handiwork was showcased, giving something for every fabric and quilt enthusiast. The biggest excitement for us was the viewing of the Hoffman Challenge winners' exhibits. Why? Because Carol's quilt was there!!

Titled 'Effervescence', this quilt is fabulous! I sent all of my Boca quilting friends over to see that. (They all wanted to know how Carol got that shimmery effect on the bubbles. ) Way to go, Carol. Can't see what she comes up with next.

Back from Quilt Market!

Carol and Johanna attended the Houston fall Quilt Market and have returned filled with ideas and inspiration, not to mention orders for lots of fabrics, patterns and other goodies! They both took photos of the schoolhouse sessions they attended and the wonderful quilts they saw over the 3 day market.

Same pattern, different fabrics. Although many people look at the samples as the only way to make a quilt, if you use different color schemes you can get entirely different looks. A traditional pattern can look bright and modern with bright fabrics.

Johanna HAD to have her picture taken with Ricky Tims. He will be in Jacksonville in the spring for a workshop.

The biggest trend we saw with quilting at market was EMBELLISHMENTS on the quilts. Ric rac, shown above, as well as flowers, yo-yos,buttons, prairie points and more.

Carol and designer/author Kathy Alice, who demonstrated her flip flop ruler and book and how to sew curves without pinning and clipping (hurray!). Carol has the book and ruler so perhaps a demo is in order from her at the shop?

More ric rac on the quilts, along with those big colorful Dill buttons that we all love! How adorable is this quilt block?

The Interchangeable 2 Bag

We love Ellen Medlock's purse patterns, kits, and accessories. I was asked to post a photo of our store sample for the Interchangeable 2 bag.

If you are a fan, too, then you'll be excited to know that Ellen is introducing NEW bag patterns and kits at Quilt Market this week! I saw a photo of a minaudiere (evening bag) that you cover with fabric (I think it is a no-sew bag perhaps?) I first met Ellen and discovered her gorgeous accessories last year in Houston so after a successful year working with her, I am looking forward to seeing her again and seeing what she has in store for us next!

McKenna Ryan Beachwalk Quilt Block Sample

Carol just finished one of the blocks from McKenna Ryan's new Beachwalk pattern using the coordinating fabrics from Hoffman. The colors are so magnificent, don't you agree?

The individual pattern can be made into a wall hanging (or anything else you can imagine) or all of the blocks can be combined to create the full quilt. Directions call for fusible applique methods, of course if you are a traditional hand applique fan you can do that. We have all of the patterns available at Three Crafty Ladies (and Three Crafty Quilters) so if you can't make it in, give us a call! Kits are available, too!

It's October! Have you finished a Halloween themed project yet?
Witch Way to the Beach is the newest pattern designed by our very own Carol DeCesare.

It is a collage quilt! The pattern is has the template to trace as well as directions on how to create the collage. This hilarious fabric masterpiece is made from scraps! The witch is flyer on the broom in a bikini on her way to Sanibel. Her suntan lotion and towel are handy in the cauldron and her cool cat is along for the ride with a good book! Crafty Lady! Digital Image Cards

In case I haven't told you in a while, we have the best customers at Three Crafty Ladies! Everyone is creative and we often discuss the many arts,crafts and projects that they work on.

We had the pleasure of a visit from Anne, who stopped in while vacationing from the UK. She brought some beautiful cards that she had made using copyright free digital images that she found on the website www.crafterscompanion.co.uk.

She added color, dimension, embellishments and more. Aren't they great? Handmade cards are a gift in itself - couldn't you see one of these cards framed and hung up as decor? Anne also mentioned the cd's that are available commercially with copyright free images. Do you make cards? Show us your correspondence art!!

Three Crafty Ladies Craft Challenge Entrants

Some really great and very unique creations came as entries into our shops' first Craft Challenge. Our esteemed judge had the difficult task of choosing one winner (the Crafty Ladies were happy to not have that decision!) The previous post shows our winner, Michele T., with her Tropical tote bag. Other entries were:

Mary Ann's super cute sock monkey dress. (my mother used to dress me in smocked dresses like this when I was a little girl!)

Carol A's child's quiet activity folder. It came with an 'instruction' tag that reads:

Grandma,

When your grand-daughter is restless in church or at the doctor's office, give her this 'folder' to play with.

How clever!!

A wonderfully embellished doll dress from Emmy.

Betty's took the challenge fabric and combined it with some Kaffe Fassett fabric - nice!!!!

Each bag entry was so different! Tryna's bag had a sophisticated bamboo handle and was finished beautifully inside as well!

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our craft challenge! We enjoyed giving away the fabric to play with and to see how each and everyone who took the challenge used it in different ways!

Our first Three Crafty Ladies Craft Challenge deadline has come to a close and we have received some really amazing entries!! It is so cool to see all of the different creations people made with the same fabric! Some entries came in person and some by photo so we are in the process of getting them all photographed and judged and then we will announce the winner.

In the meantime, Carol and Tracie each took the challenge and this is what they created:

Carol used a bleach pen to take out the color in an interesting pattern. She added pom-pom fringe edges and a beautiful layered ribbon and button embellishment.

Tracie created a cool fiber arts necklace. A bold statement, three strand accessory!

Project Modern

While I don't discriminate in my love for all fabrics and styles and appreciate the work and design of all genres of patterns, I consider myself more of a modern quilter. I follow the Modern Quilt Guild online (wish there was a guild somewhere in the southern part of the state!) and enjoy the work that I see the many talented 'modern' quilters create. I think modern in the color choices and patterns that I lean towards. What fascinates me is the two completely different looks one can achieve using a traditional pattern, such as a log cabin, and traditional vs. contemporary fabrics. If you visit the guilds' site, you'll see some beautiful modern quilts.

They are announcing an online challenge on their site as well, dubbed Project Modern. It launches September 1st with celebrity (quilt world celebrity) judges and prizes. I'll looking forward to checking it out soon. Check it out, too, and let us know what you think.

Surface Design Workshop a Success!

Our surface design workshop on Thursday night was a wonderful success! Thanks to Carol, who planned and ran the class, along with our creative students, who embraced the sticky and messy projects and seemed to have so much fun.

Participants in our sold-out workshop got to work on several different surface design methods.

We did a resist, which we painted and textured over when dried;

Stamped, collaged and colored;

Removed color, added color, and more!

Carol had lots of samples to show the great group of ladies that attended.

If you missed out (which I am a bit sorry to say, that if you weren't there, then you did), we will be having more workshops in the future. Keep updated through the blog, Facebook and the website for information on future events.

Fabric Surface Design Workshop

We are offering a fabric surface design workshop on Thursday, August 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the shop.

The workshop will be an opportunity to learn and play with different surface design techniques for fabric. Everyone seems to be wild about owls! Nighty News featured a live 'owl cam' that has had millions of hits (watch it here). It was hard to resist the new line of fabric from Adorn It, a popular scrapbooking company with such great papers that they brought it to fabric - hurray!

The panel is so cute and has so many ways to be used - quilt, wall hanging, pillows, and more! We have these panels plus coordinating fabrics AND a felt our kit to make a stuffed cutie hootie!

Crafty Challenge!

If you have been in the shop and/or read the last newsletter then you may know that we are have the 1st Three Crafty Ladies Craft Challenge!! What is this, you ask? I'll tell you!

Interested participants are to come into the store to pick up the challenge fabric - which is 1/2 of a mystery fabric (all the same) for free! Our challenge to you is to make something out of it. Anything. You must use the fabric in it, although you don't have to use it all up and you can use other materials with it. Quilt, sew, glue, make jewelry - anything that your creative imagination sparks. Have the item and/or photographs of your finished project to us by September 1st. We will have some judges choose a winner (or winners) to win a gift certificate to Three Crafty Ladies and other goodies.

Come in and get your fabric and start crafting! What will you create?

More New Fabric In!!

It's so exciting to open those big boxes when the UPS man comes by, especially when the return address is from Michael Miller and Northcott! Check out this panel from Northcott's Bliss line. Each color looks like it is from marble fabric and the hint of gold on the outlines makes the print pop!

The coordinating fabric is beautiful as well, including a large repeat flower.

The main fabric for Michael Miller's Pretty Bird line is great looking! I see so many possibilities with this, don't you? We have some nice coordinating prints with this, too!

Crafty Lady! Origami Backpack

We had a lovely visitor in last week that had the coolest fabric backpack. What made it so unique is that it had fabric origami embellishments.

Our guests' daughter used traditional origami techniques with fabric. Along with the folding it was tacked and sewn (as fabric won't stay crisply folded like origami paper). Very cool idea.

While we did not physically attend the Spring quilt market, we have met with all of our favorite fabric reps who regularly bring the new goodies to us! There are so many fabulous fabrics coming out in the coming months, I need to get an additional fabric shelf for the shop. We have new fabrics coming in from Westminster, Moda, Free Spirit, Timeless Treasures, Hoffman, Kaufman, Michael Miller and more!!

I was reminded of my youth when I saw these rag dolls from Michael Miller.

We used to get dolls, books and animals that were printed on fabric. My mom would cut, sew and stuff them with us. Simple. I like the idea of simple, and then of course you can dress and embellish them.
There are three on each panel, even though the photo shows two. So it's a little different from what we usually have but that is a good thing!

Although I can't find a photo yet, we have a line by Paintbrush Studios that are the perfect Sanibel fabric, for all you tropical fabric enthusiasts (or if you just love beautiful fabric.) Colorful fish, shells, starfish and coordinating blenders that look like they were painted with watercolors. Really gorgeous!

Pajama Pants - Luxurious Lounging!

Everyone knows I LOVE fabric! It often speaks to me and tells me what I should make with it.
Last week I unrolled a bolt of Ellen Medlock's new fabric Enchanted Damask and it said:
Lounge Pants!

Pajama style pants are just the best to sleep in and hang around in. I can walk around out front walking my pups comfortably. I just knew this pattern was perfect. I didn't use a pattern per se - I made my own using a different pair. I need to adjust the elastic a bit around the waist.

May be a bit wide as well but I think that makes them extra comfy!

I have plans for a matching top! I am going to relax now.

Mary Lou created this lovely wall hanging. When you embellish quilts you really get to personalize them, add your own touch and make it your own. Here is a close up of one of the hearts.

Embellished Shell Runner - Beachside Bling!

We knew this was going to be a beautiful quilt when we saw the pattern.

Connie made the sample; quilted, appliqued, and embellished. [smile, Connie, you are so talented!]
The photography doesn't do this beautiful piece justice (and neither does my attempt at cropping them).

Designer Shells, from Critter Pattern Works, can be created with your favorite fabrics. We used mostly batiks. It can be embellished as much as you want. It will make a great wall hanging or runner. We have a wonderful island quilter who is creating this for her friends' home and reupholstering a chair cushion to match with her chosen border batik. In addition to the Designer Shells, we have another coordinating shell pattern and one with seahorses.

Bling! Beads Galore!

I love beads, don't you? Even if you don't make jewelry or embellish quilts, how can you not love colorful, shiny little objects that look so tiny and pretty and even better in a group? I love running my hands through the bowls of beads that we have out for our famous bead bracelet make-and-takes on Thursdays.

We [finally] received a huge shipment of new beads that were selected at CHA in January. So many different colors and textures! The creative opportunities are endless.

Do you like the look of the fine add-a-bead bracelets available on the market? Pretty pieces in different colors and finishes, often sold to commemorate an event or capture a memory (yes, I pay attention to those commercials and print ads!) These glass beads above look stunning and capture the essence of the fine pieces. This Pumpkat Pattern from Storybook Quilts isn't a brand new pattern but this sample that just went up in our shop is! How cute is it? Pumpkat is just one in a series of Garden Patch Cats that we have, and they are all so great - cat's in the shapes or likeness of vegetables! We did this sample in batiks, which looks absolutely amazing! If you are looking for something fresh, feeling green, and looking for a simple and fabulous quilt to create, this may be it! One makes a nice wall hanging or pillow. Put several cat veggies together as blocks to make a larger quilt. Meow!

I have always loved craft blogs and spend [probably way too much] time reading many of my favorites and searching for new ones. It is such a great source of inspiration and perfect to keep up on crafting trends. While reading my daily dose of Craft, I was linked to an article featured on a craft site called Chica and Jo. These ladies have a site that has lots of great craft projects and ideas. As I perused their site I came to find that they visit Sanibel every year and has been to our shop! I can't help but get excited when fabulous little craft shop on our tropical little island in SW Florida is mentioned to the world.

Sanibel Island Mini Quilt

Carol finished the sample art quilt and hung it at the shop. How great is this? Shell and water fabric surround the applique island. It is embellished with shells (of course!). We have it available as a kit (including everything except batting) and a pattern. It will be up on our website later today or you can call the shop for one if you can't wait!

Art Stamps have Arrived

I have been searching and waiting to find some new and exciting wood mounted stamps with a shell or beach theme for our shop. I found in in Christine Adolph's line for Stampington.

There are shells and other sea life mixed with interesting backgrounds, including writing. There are two cubes available that have 6 sides of stamps each, images and textures that coordinate. These stamps can stand alone for a card or scrapbook page embellishment or on fabric (or anything else you enjoy stamping on.) Come in and check them out!

Jelly Roll and Charm Project

The popularity of pre-cut fabrics are spreading throughout the industry, with many companies offering their own selections. Moda, which I believe was the first - or at least one of them - to offer different pre-cuts with cute bakery names like Jelly Roll, Layer Cake, and Turnover. We started carrying some of the Moda Jelly Rolls and Charm packs and now have rolls from Robert Kaufman and Bali Pops from Hoffman.

There are so many projects that can use pre-cuts and the lack of cutting gives you more time to sew! We have lots of books and patterns that use these time saving selections. Of course you can create your own projects!

Connie created four of these place mats (above) and one table runner (photo below) using one Moda 12 Days of Christmas Jelly Roll, one Charm pack and some coordinating red fabric fabric for the border and back.

My photos don't do this terrific and easy project justice. Get's your creative juices flowing, doesn't it?!

King Size Quilts

Connie was at it again!

She waltzes into the shop one morning last week with two giant bags. She had completed not one but TWO king size quilts! The quilting is done with hearts and stars on the above piece.

The colors on this quilt are magnificent! Most of the fabrics are batiks, including the backing, which complements the fron perfectly!

New Fabric Just In

Mom Cards

We quilters/crafters are always looking for projects to use the scraps we tend to save. With mother's day coming up this weekend and store bought card prices so very high I thought I'd make my own. I had seen sewn cards in the past and have making mini scrap pendants and charms, so I looked around at what was on my project tables and started to play.

Gather:

fabric scraps, card stock, blank greeting card or folded card stock, rubber stamp letters, permanent black ink pad, scissors, sewing machine

I have been working on a string quilt and had lots of little scraps and strip cutoffs by my sewing machine. The rubber stamps were not far away so I stamped 'Mom' on some of the fabric pieces. Some inexpensive, plain white cards were ready made so I cut a scrap piece of cardstock the same size as the face of the card. I began to lay pieces one by one on the cardstock and sewed around each fabric scrap on the machine. I used whatever needle was there, however you wouldn't want to use too thick of a machine needle, as it may leave big holes.

Once the cardstock piece was covered with the fabric, I layered it on to the face of the card (with the card open) and sewed around the edge. Use scissors to trim any fabric hanging over the edges. The inside of the card will now only show the stitching and holes rather than all of the random stitching. If you don't mind seeing the holes and bobbin thread you could sew right to the card.

Of course this doesn't only have to be a 'Mom' card. It can have no writing, be personalized with a name or a favorite image or for another special occasion. Make up a small bundle of plain fabric quilt cards, tie them up with a ribbon and give them as a gift. School is ending soon and this would be a nice way to thank a teacher for a great year.

The Ultimate Accessory - It's a Wrap!

It's Batik-a-licious!

Made from strips of batik fabrics and meant to be warn with the 'wrong' side showing, this wrap is my 'it' piece for my wardrobe now.

I spied this wrap warming up a fellow vendor at the Fort Myers Quilt Show in January (when it was so very cold) and I followed her back to her booth to pick up the pattern by Rag Merchant. I've been working on it in between projects and it is finally finished!!

Strips of various batik fabrics are cut and pieced and smaller strips are layers on top of those and finished with decorative stitching. The piece is meant to be frayed (which was a little nerve wracking until I happily saw the results) and warn frayed side out, although both sides look terrific!

Can't you just envision this over a strappy little sundress on a summer evening? Embellished with a sparkly pin? And for travel? It can't wrinkle so roll it up and put it a bag!

No-See-Ems (not the bugs)

If you live in or have visited Florida then you know what no-see-ums are (little annoying bugs that you can't really see - hence the name.)

Today is Demo Day at Three Crafty Ladies and Carol is going to demo - no-see-ems of the sewing kind - stitches in the bindings that you can't see! Carol is a very accomplished and artistic quilter who currently has one of her pieces hanging on exhibit in the Florida Museum of Natural History. Let her share some of her tricks and tips with you today! Demo Day is all day from 10-5 at the store. She will be demonstrating these invisible stitches on the most adorable holiday place mats that Connie made from our new Moda Fabric Jelly Rolls and Charms (photos will be up later on these). We hope to see you all at the shop!

Crafty Lady! Fabric Strip Crochet Bag

The staff at Three Crafty Ladies seem to have caught my habit of zeroing in on the fantastic handywork of our wonderfully talented customers. Connie snapped this photo of a handbag crocheted out of fabric strips and embellished with pieces of shells! The owner was gracious enough to let her do an impromptu little photo shoot!

We didn't have the opportunity to take a picture of another gorgeous bag that came into the shop on the shoulder of a visitor. Sewn from batik fabrics, the front flap was a different texture - it was a panel created by pinweaving! I have been doing a little research online as to how to create this look. I am always eager to try new techniques - I'll keep you all posted as to what I find and create.

New Fabric!

Most of you know that we Crafty Ladies LOVE when the UPS driver comes to our door because it means he is bringing us something! And we always hope it is one of those longer boxes that are the size of fabric bolts! We have been fortunate to see our friend in brown quite often lately. He brought us the newest line of fabric from Clothworks - Beachcomber. Shells in different tropical color ways, along with coordinating 'pebble' patterns, lighthouses, and a panels that have stripes of lighthouses, sandpipers and sand dollars.

We always so thrilled to get new shell patterns in!
We also have new fabric from Moda's Freebird line and new batiks from Hoffman. We'll post photos soon and many will be up on our website! Check back soon to see what else is new - a lot of great fabrics are on their way!

Trucking Along

I have always loved this quilt pattern - Trucking Along from Castilleja Cotton. It had always been popular at Three Crafty Ladies, as we are especially fond of sea turtles in Sanibel.

We have created a new sample for the shop and put together some new kits with great colors and fabrics. The cute little turtle really seem to swim through the water! Kit's like Trucking Along are a great way to 'grab and go' a great little project. The patterns and kits are available in the shop, and will be available on our website very soon (as will the exact dimensions and specific kit information. I just couldn't resist putting a photo of this adorable wall hanging up for all to see!)

Crafty Lady! Shell piece and Fiber Necklace

Joyce is our crafty jewelry lady. She plays around with new products and comes in wearing a unique necklace. Joyce used two different trims that we have in the shop. One of our famous shell drills made a hole in her found piece of shell. A little wire and she created herself a great accessory. (Thanks for being a sport with the photo after a root canal, Joyce!)

Gorgeous Quilts

I never cease to be amazed at the talents of our Crafty Ladies! Connie is always getting inspired by the new fabrics that come into the shop and uses that inspiration to create the most amazing quilts! And she starts and finishes those projects at such speed with no sacrificing quality of workmanship!

This is one of THREE quilts that Connie finished recently and brought in to the shop to show us. They are magnificent and colorful and my photos do not do them justice! I photographed two of the quilts to share with you.

Sun Printing Workshop

Our new space has more space which allowed us to hold our first workshop! Sun Printing was a great success and a lot of fun! Wondering how we would set up tables and have people creating at the same time that we were open for business, it was a smooth day!

We had some light refreshments for the ladies while they waited for the sun to work it's magic. Each participant took home four printed pieces of fabric, each uniquely different. We look forward to holding more workshops in addition to Sun Printing! (information will be on our website)

Colorful Sample - Bag Love

It is fun to make samples for the store. I get to sew and tell my family "I am working" if they bother me! Honestly, it's just great to have an endless array of projects and the end result, once they are displayed, are generally positive and interesting from our wonderful customers for whom they are made to inspire.

I combined two of my favorite artist/designers to create this handbag to display at the store (when I am not 'working it' around town!)

This is Ellen Medlock's Interchangeable 2 bag pattern and handle. It is a roomy bag with a cover that can come off and be changed out for other covers. Buy the pattern and handle once and make a bag cover to match every outfit. I added a chain for the times that I want a shoulder bag.

Although the photo doesn't do it justice, the fabric is Sherrill Kahn's Chasing the Rainbow 2 by Robert Kaufman fabrics. It's so gorgeous and interesting in person, with different tones and apparent textures and hints of metallic. Her fabric comes from her mixed media art, which is fabulous and bold. The embellishment is my own creation - silk sari ribbon and vintage buttons.

I may have to take the bag on my cruise next week. Wouldn't this make the ultimate statement at a tropical dinner at sea?! The store may have to wait a week for this sample. It's bag love.

New Paper and Scrapbooking Supplies!

Patience is not always a virtue when you are ordering new craft supplies at a show. CHA in January was filled with fabulous new products, which I happily ordered for Three Crafty Ladies. Of course I couldn't take it with me - I had to wait.

This is just a very small sampling of the paper and embellishments that have been arriving from the orders. They are gorgeous! Many are two sided, some have a bit of glitter or other unique finish, they are all special. Tropical themed die packs cuts are another new addition, as well as mini chipboard albums and kits! On my to-do list is to put together a Sanibel kit - soon!!

It Must be Spring!

I couldn't resist this new line of fabric from Robert Kaufman called On a Whim. So cute! There is coordinating fabrics - pink dots, green polka dots, and stripes. A great frog fabric, too! This would make

great simple spring quilt, color blocked tote, pillow - I'd even stretch a piece of the fabric on a canvas and hang it in a girls room!

Speaking of 'simple' and 'spring' I just finished the store sample for the new Moda jelly roll kit. Pre-cut strips in a rainbow of colors come in a nice canvas mini tote bag, along with a larger fabric cut and not one but three patterns to choose from. I added batting and backing and whipped up this throw. (excuse the photo - I'm not great at photographing my quilts or editing yet.) The kit even comes with labels for you to sign your quilt!

Crafty Lady!

When it rains what do crafty people do? Create! Or go shopping for supplies! We had a great day today in the shop, as the weather was pretty awful. We had a constant flow of the nicest people, most visiting from colder climates.

We were pleased to meet bead artist Melanie Doerman while she was in our shop. She is a well known jewelry artist and author, who has an article on peyote stitch in the most recent issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry. Melanie was kind enough to let me snap a couple of photos, as she was wearing some of her incredible jewelry.

Her necklace was created with sead beads that were stitched in a design surrounding a pressed daisy.

Her cuff was so beautiful, with dimension and texture that the photo doesn't do justice. I am amazed at the artistic skill and intricate details that go into pieces like Melanie's.

Sanibel Shell Fair

Sanibel has a creative atmosphere and no other local event embodies our island so well as the annual Sanibel Shell Fair. For shell enthusiasts, the fair is an event the is known worldwide. For locals and visitors, it is a traditional, a social event, and an amazing display of art, science, and nature.

I brought my camera along to capture some of the amazing displays in the shell crafting categories. Our very own Connie Mara won a ribbon for her stained glass shell lamp. It was her first time entering - we couldn't be prouder! The top photo is sailor valentine designed by one of our customers. Sailor Valentines are amazing, intricate works of art created entirely out of shell.

Furniture encrusted with shells and so much more! Talk about being inspired!!!

Demos on how to make shell flowers were held outside in the beautiful weather. It was great to see the glue pots that we sell so many of in action! I had such a great time - I didn't even photograph a fraction of the pieces or the exhibits. It was crafty heaven with a shell theme! I am so inspired I need to gather my shells and start creating.

March is National Craft Month

What is your craft? Are you a avid quilter? Do you have piles of pretty papers for scrapbooking or decoupage? Do you create jewelry to match your outfits or surprise your loved ones with fabulous handmade gifts? Do you enjoy wrapping gifts as much as selecting them? We'd love to hear what craft s you do.

I have a large (LARGE) collection of craft books and wish I spent as much time creating as I do reading them. Papercrafts have always been a love, and I am truly enjoying my sewing machine.

We have such interesting customers and friends that come into our shop and share their creativity. We have met a few who are studying various art and crafts such as textiles in graduate school! Tell us what you enjoy doing. What craft do you wish you could learn? March is National Craft Month. Use that as a good reason to give yourself time to craft - whether it is a long time passion or a new venture.

Crafty Lady!

Our very own Crafty Lady, Connie, has created this absolutely gorgeous shell lamp to enter in the Sanibel Shell Fair and show. She combined her many years of stained glass art expertise with shells. We are so proud of her artistic abilities and hope she wins!

You can see Connie's lamp (proudly displayed on Kaffe Fassett shell fabric) and many other remarkable shell exhibits in different categories this coming week at the Sanibel Community House. The show runs from Thursday, March 4 through Saturday, March 6. If you are on or near Sanibel, it's a must-see event!

Hoffman Challenge Fabrics!

I came home from a week long family vacation to find LOTS of new, eagerly awaited products have arrived! There are lots to mention (plus I need to take photos) so I'll post more later in the week.
In the fabric department, the Hoffman Challenge fabric has arrived!

How great are these colors? We have the lighter blue color way with coordinating fabrics.

Dolphins!

Driving over the causeway on my way to Sanibel, I see the dark little crest break the surface of the water and I take that as a personal greeting to the island, as I never tire of seeing dolphins in the wild. They frolic as families by the beach shore and come close to the boat waiting for me to throw my catch back. I find them to be happy creatures.

We are so excited to offer our latest quilt patterns and kits - Dolphin Dusk and Dolphin Dawn. Created by our very own quilt artist, Carol DeCesare, they simple quilt projects. Designed with beautiful new fabric from Robert Kaufman's Chasing the Rainbow collection, it is a perfect introduction to the newest trend of art quilting!

The quilts come in two colorways - a warm and a cool - dawn and dusk! The dolphin leaps out of the water, highlighted by the sun's reflection.

Crafty Lady - Fabric Stip Baskets

Super talented Lajean Dobbs stopped by Three Crafty Ladies to show us her gorgeous baskets! These baskets are made with strips of fabric and cotton cording (or clothseline) and machine sewn while being coiled! What a great project to create with leftover fabric. My favorite is her beach themed bowl with the shells as embellishments. Using this techniche, Lajean make bowls of all sizes. The piece she is holding is shallow like a tray. You can make handbags using this method and sew on some handles for a snappy and sturdy accessory! Patterns and ideas can be found in the book It's A Wrap by Susan Breier. We have the book in the store, as well as a the cording and are awaiting the release of Susan's 2nd book, which is being released this week!

Fabric baskets, bowls, and bags like these would make great gifts. How early do you start making your holiday gifts? (I am a bit of holiday spirit, as I just ordered fabric for Christmas 2010 this past Friday. Wait until you see it!!!!) Happy crafting!
